Transnational Broadcasting Studies (TBS), a biannual journal focusing on broadcasting that transcends borders, was established in 1998. The idea for the journal came from Adham Center founder Sheikh Kamal Adham, who envisioned the center using the new technology of the Internet to move beyond the borders of Egypt and the region and make a serious contribution to the academic and professional broadcasting field. TBS incorporates academic, industry-focused, and news articles; feature interviews; symposium discussions; conference reports; and more.

Abdallah Schleifer and Hussein Amin act as senior editors; creative director is Shems Friedlander; Humphrey Davies is managing editor and Mayada Wahsh is web designer. TBS is supported by an editorial advisory board consisting of industry leaders plus top scholars from around the world. Among our contributing editors are Chris Forrester, an outstanding broadcasting trade journalist, Jacob Arback, former vice president of DirecTV and managing director of Business Research International, and former TBS managing editor Sarah Sullivan.

TBS's Fall 2003 issue leads with the Arab Media summit held in Dubai in November 2003, highlighting the striking near absence of the Arab satellite channels from the podia of a conference largely devoted to discussing the latter's performance. In the summit's corridors, TBS 11 interviews Ali Al-Ahmed and Nart Bouran from Abu Dhabi TV on their post-war strategy, Jihad Khazen on the progress of the LBC/Al Hayat joint venture, Riz Khan, and Danny Schechter. A trip to Al Jazeera's Qatar headquarters on the eve of a major management change (Stop Press) provides interviews with Ibrahim Helal, reporter Amr El Kahky, then manager Adnan Sharif, and, later in Cairo, investigative journalist Yousri Foda. The issue also presents a special debate over the Arabsats featuring advocates and critics from Hisham Sharabi to Abdel Moneim Saeed, brings the Media on Media archive of Iraq War coverage up to date, and talks with Zafar Siddiqi, Ward Edmonds, and other participants in the major Gulf Arabsat development, the launching of CNBC Arabiya, the world's first all-business 24-hour channel in Arabic. TBS 11 looks further afield too, with coverage of Egypt's efforts to crack down on satellite piracy and other regional stories, plus the French government's determination to launch a CNN-style channel of its own, as well as reports on academic conferences and book reviews.

TBS's Spring 2003 issue "Covering the Coverage" focuses on the reporting of the Iraq War. Dispatches from Maggy Zanger, Chris Gray, and John Simpson give a glimpse of satellite journalists' day-to-day experience in the field and interviews with channels executives such as Mohammed Jasim Al Ali, Ibrahim Helal, Ali Al Ahmad, Nart Bouran, and Salah Negm discuss the challenges faced by news organizations as they grapple with the demands of an on-screen war. The issue also looks at how the press itself became, to an unprecedented and controversial extent, an actor in the war, with every media move subjected to intense scrutiny by audiences and governments. Articles examine, from a variety of often conflicting view-points, how various audiences watched the war, while the new Media-on-Media section archives some of the best writing by journalists on their profession's handling of the challenges.

TBS's Fall 2002 issue "Media in the Midst of War" kicks off with an interview with Al Jazeera's Yosri Fouda, whose recent missions included a historic encounter with the planners of the 9-11 attacks. CNNI's CEO Chris Smith and the US government's Chris Ross shed light on the differing responses of their organizations to the September attacks, and Ali-Al-Hedeithy and Salah Negm speak to Abdallah Schleifer of developments on the critical Gulf-based TV broadcasting scene. More than twenty other articles, academic papers and transcripts, including papers from the Cambridge conference "Arab Satellite Broadcasting in the Age of Globalization," make this one of TBS's richest issues to date.

TBS’s Spring 2002 issue focused on "Media in the Midst of War," with coverage of the media post-September 11 and the media in the midst of the recent Israeli incursions into Palestinian territory. The issue includes exclusive interviews with CNN Chief News Executive Eason Jordan; Abu Dhabi TV Deputy Director Mohamed Dourrachad; and Abu Dhabi anchorman and producer Jasim Al-Azzawy, who told TBS about his expulsion from Jerusalem by the Israeli government.

The Fall 2001 issue focused on Al-Jazeera, which was at the time making headlines around the world for its exclusive coverage from Afghanistan and its airing of videotapes received from Osama bin Laden's al-Qaeda network. TBS reported from Doha on the agreements between Al-Jazeera and CNN—and, a few months later, reported on the rift in that relationship—and spoke with Al-Jazeera Chairman of the Board Sheikh Hamad bin Thamer Al Thani and Managing Director Mohammed Jasim Al-Ali.
