Center Sponsors Rumi Evening May 9, 2001 Oriental Hall was filled to capacity for the May 9 showing of "Rumi: The Wings of Love," a documentary film on Jalaluddin Rumi and the Whirling Dervishes written, produced, and directed by Shems Friedlander, director of AUC's Apple Center for Graphic Communications. The event was sponsored by the Adham Center, where Friedlander serves as chairman of the Sony Gallery International Advisory Board and creative director of TBS. Readings of Rumi's poetry by Shems Friedlander, AUC graduating senior Nuri Friedlander, and Adham Center Director Abdallah Schleifer preceded the screening of the film. "Rumi: The Wings of Love" was filmed in Cairo, Istanbul, and Konya and is narrated by Emmy Award-winning actor Peter Boyle. Footage of zikr and sema ceremonies is set to dervish music and enhanced by interviews with Sheikh Abu Bakr Siraj ad-Din, Seyyed Hossein Nasr, and Sheikh Omer Tugrul Inancer. The Adham Center provided technical support. For more information about the film, see www.rumisociety.org. |
