Amin Gives Keynote Address at Global Conference OCT. 15, 2000 Dr. Hussein Amin, AUC professor of mass communications and Senior Adham Center Associate, gave the keynote speech "From Obligation to Opportunity: New Visions for Media" at the Global Fusion 2000 conference held in St. Louis in October. The conference, organized by Leo Gher of Southern Illinois University, was born out of SIU's desire to increase its commitment to international and intercultural education. This first Global Fusion meeting drew around 150 participants, getting the word out through its endorsement by three major international journalism education organizations, AEJMC, BEA, and ICA. The Adham Center's electronic journal Transnational Broadcasting Studies (TBS), as a conference affiliate, sponsored a luncheon and will publish award-winning papers in its Spring 2001 issue. Amin and Adham Center Publications Manager Sarah Sullivan participated in the panel "Establishing Standards for Online Academic Journals," along with TBS editorial board members Richard Vincent and Joe Straubhaar, looking at the experience of establishing TBS and how academic journals can move into the digital age. Audience support for the TBS project-which combines scholarly articles with industry news, interviews, and other resources-was strong, and discussion centered on the need for communications publications to reflect not just academic work but also developments in the professional field. Sullivan also gave a presentation on building electronic journals and departmental websites as part of the pre-conference workshop "New Media Development: Newsletters, Magazines, and Web Pages." |
