Amin to Head BEA International Division

APRIL 10, 2000 Adham Center Senior Associate Hussein Amin was confirmed as chairman elect of the International Division of the Broadcast Education Association at the BEA’s annual meeting in Las Vegas. The BEA is one of the United States’ foremost organizations for communications educators.

At the same conference, Adham Center Director Abdallah Schleifer, Amin, and Shems Friedlander, director of AUC’s Apple Center for Graphic Communications and creative director of the Adham Center’s journal Transnational Broadcasting Studies (TBS), joined three members of the TBS editorial advisory board on a panel titled “Middle East Electronic Media in the Digital Age: Content and Technology.” Schleifer examined the ethics of electronic journalism in the new century, using the example of digital satellite broadcasting in the Middle East. Amin looked at Arab media on the Internet, in particular questions of competition with traditional media. Friedlander spoke on new trends in advertising in the Middle East as the region and the world enter the digital age.

Adham Center Publications Manager Sarah Sullivan acted as respondent on a panel titled “The Global Peace Initiative: Civic Discourse and the Digital Age,” which examined the role broadcast and new media play in conflict and the potential they have for promoting peace in regions around the world.

Sullivan, who has served for the past year as the BEA International Division’s webmaster, was elected to produce the division newsletter as well as continue the website.
